How the flashcard maker works

Write what the cards are about, for example "farm animals for a 4 year old, include a tractor", and pick how many cards you want. The AI chooses one thing for every card that suits the child's age, draws each picture once, and typesets every word, so nothing is misspelled. Cards come as picture-and-word squares, six to a sheet, or as fold-and-glue cards with the word and a short fact on the back, three to a sheet. Every sheet is US Letter with dashed cutting lines and prints on one side, ready to cut out the same day.

What makes a good flashcard for a young child

The flashcards children learn from share a few simple things, whether they are for a toddler's first words or a classroom vocabulary topic.

  1. 1

    One thing on every card

A single apple, not a fruit bowl. One clear subject on a plain background lets the child connect the picture to the word straight away.

  2. 2

    Big, bright pictures

Bold outlines and strong colours read from across a table. Black-and-white outlines work too, and colouring the card in is a lesson of its own.

  3. 3

The word a child actually says

"Dog", not "canine". Use the everyday name, spelled correctly and printed large enough to point at.

  4. 4

    Things the child already meets

Animals from a favourite book, food from the kitchen, vehicles on the street. Familiar things are learned fastest and make the cards easy to use on a walk or at mealtimes.

  5. 5

A few cards at a time

Show a handful, then add more as they are learned. A small deck the child enjoys beats a big one they lose interest in.

  6. 6

    Sturdy cards

Print on card stock, or glue the sheet to thin card before cutting. Fold-and-glue cards are double thickness by design, and laminating them makes them last.

InkChamps handles the pictures, the words and the layout. You choose the topic, the child's age and how the cards look.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make printable flashcards for kids?

Describe what the cards are about, choose how many cards and a template, and download the PDF. InkChamps picks one thing for every card that suits the child's age, draws a picture of it and prints its word under it. Print the sheets on card stock and cut along the dashed lines.

What size are the flashcards?

Every card is a square about 3.2 inches (8 cm) across, printed on US Letter paper. Picture-and-word cards fit six to a sheet; fold-and-glue cards fit three to a sheet, each two squares wide before it is folded.

Can I make flashcards in another language?

Yes. Write the description in that language, or ask for it, for example "farm animals in Spanish". The words, the facts on fold-and-glue cards and the cutting instructions print in it, including Spanish, French, German, Hindi, Nepali, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

Do I need a double-sided printer for two-sided flashcards?

No. Fold-and-glue cards print the picture and the word side by side on one side of the paper. Cut out each card, fold it on the dotted line and glue the blank sides together, and the picture is on the front and the word and a short fact are on the back.

Can children colour the flashcards in?

Yes. Choose black and white and every picture prints as clean outlines for the child to colour before cutting the cards out.

Can I use my own flashcard design?

Yes. Upload a card you like as a card template. The AI reads how its pictures are drawn and how the card is laid out (its border, corners and where the word sits) and makes every card in the deck like it, each in its own colour. It never copies the template's own picture or word.

How many flashcards should a toddler have at once?

Start with a handful of things the child sees every day, such as animals, food and toys, and add a few at a time. A 12-card deck is a good first set; 24 to 48 cards suit a theme a child already loves or a whole classroom topic.

How much does a flashcard deck cost?

Flashcards cost 1 credit a card, whichever template you choose: 12 cards is 12 credits and 24 cards is 24 credits. The picture-and-word and fold-and-glue templates cost the same.

Why make your own printable flashcards

Boxed flashcard sets cover the same few topics for every child. Making your own lets a deck follow what a child loves this month, the words a class is learning this week, or the language spoken at home.

InkChamps draws one picture for every card and typesets every word, so a deck in Hindi, Japanese or Arabic is spelled exactly as it should be. Choose bright colour cards, black-and-white outlines to colour in, or upload a card you like and get the whole deck in its layout.

Every deck is a print-ready PDF of US Letter sheets with dashed cutting lines, printed one side per sheet, so it works on any home printer.
