Book Bolt Alternative: What Reviewers Complain About, and How InkChamps Handles It

Gunjan Chhetri··Updated
The InkChamps coloring book creator: describe the book, choose who it is for and the page count, then generate

Book Bolt has a TrustScore of 3.0 on Trustpilot from 79 reviews (checked October 4, 2026), and the reviews are split almost down the middle: 38 one-star, 34 five-star. Fans like its puzzle makers and keyword research. The one-star reviews keep coming back to the same handful of problems.

This page goes through each complaint, says plainly how InkChamps works instead, and is honest about where Book Bolt is still the better tool. Sources are linked at the end.

The complaints at a glance

What reviewers report about Book Bolt How InkChamps works
Charged on the last day of the 3-day free trial, or after cancelling No free trial to forget. You see the price and pay up front
Subscriptions that kept renewing, refunds refused Credit packs are one-time and never renew. Plans cancel from Settings
Support that does not answer Email support@inkchamps.com; refund requests reviewed in 1 to 2 business days
The design studio freezing, slow PDF exports, bugs after updates No design canvas to fight: you describe the book and InkChamps builds the PDF
AI images with no character consistency, credits burned on regenerating Your characters are uploaded once and drawn from the same sheet on every page
Keyword and sales numbers that look inflated InkChamps does not do keyword research. Use free tools for that (below)
Limited templates, lots of manual editing Whole books from a short brief, in six kinds of book

1. Reported: free-trial charges and billing surprises

This is the biggest theme by far. A Reddit thread on r/KDPLowContent sums it up: most of the bad reviews are about trials that could not be cancelled in time. On Trustpilot, reviewers describe being charged on day three of the trial, being charged after closing their account, a yearly renewal they had forgotten about, and refund requests that were turned down. Book Bolt's own pricing page says cancellation takes two clicks; if you try it, cancel well before the trial ends and check your bank statement.

How InkChamps works:

  • No trial that turns into a charge. There is nothing to cancel in time. You choose what you pay for, and you pay before anything is made.
  • One-time credit packs. Packs start at $4.99 for 50 credits and never renew. Credits last 12 months. If you make one book a season, you never need a subscription.
  • Plans you can leave. Monthly plans (Starter is $9.99 for 125 credits) cancel from Settings → Billing → Cancel Subscription. You keep access until the end of the period you paid for, and it stops renewing. See how to cancel.
  • Refunds for what you did not use. Unused credits are refunded on request; see the refund policy. Credits already spent on drawn pages cannot be refunded, because every drawn image costs us too.

2. Reported: support that does not reply

Several one-star reviews say emails about charges went unanswered.

How InkChamps works: write to support@inkchamps.com or use the support page. Refund requests are reviewed within 1 to 2 business days, and you get an email at each step.

3. Reported: the studio freezing, slow exports and bugs

Long-time subscribers on Trustpilot describe Book Bolt Studio becoming unresponsive, projects that will not open, slow PDF downloads at busy times, and updates that bring new bugs. Others mention answer keys that need lining up by hand and PDF pages that come out as flat images.

How InkChamps works: there is no design canvas to drag things around on. You describe the book, InkChamps plans every page, draws it at the right line weight for the reader's age, and builds the PDF with the bleed and margins KDP expects. You read the pages, redraw any single page you want changed, and download.

  • You only pay for books that finish. Credits are charged when the book is done. If a book fails, nothing is taken from your balance.
  • Redraw one page, not the whole book. A redraw costs that one page's credits.

4. Reported: AI images that do not stay consistent

One reviewer says character consistency was missing entirely: they kept regenerating images, used up their credits and were left with an unfinished book.

How InkChamps works: in the "Who is in your book?" step you add up to five characters, each with a name and a picture. InkChamps draws them from that sheet on every page they appear on, which keeps them consistent from page 3 to page 30; if one page comes out wrong, you redraw just that page. Story books are planned page by page before anything is drawn, so a picture matches its line of text.

5. Reported: doubtful keyword and sales numbers

Reviewers and Reddit users question Book Bolt's search volumes and sales estimates. In one thread a user asks whether a book ranked around 500,000 really sells the 71 copies a month the tool estimated.

Honest answer: InkChamps does not do keyword research, so it is not a replacement for that part of Book Bolt. For free, reliable ideas, type a phrase into Amazon search and read the autocomplete suggestions. Those are real searches buyers make.

6. Reported: limited templates and manual work

Book Bolt is a design tool: you build interiors from templates and edit them by hand. Reviewers ask for more templates and less fiddly editing.

How InkChamps works: you write a short brief and get a whole book. Six kinds are built in:

  • Coloring books for every age, with line weight and detail set by the reader's age
  • Story coloring books, with a line or two of story on every page
  • Illustrated children's picture books in ten art styles
  • Activity books: mazes, word search, sudoku, tracing, dot-to-dot, spot the difference and ABC letters, all decorated in your theme
  • Educational color-to-learn books, one idea per page
  • KDP paperback covers, with the spine sized from your page count

Not sure what to write? There are 231 free ready-made briefs you can open in InkChamps with one click.

When Book Bolt is still the better choice

Be fair to it. Book Bolt is the stronger tool if you:

  • Want keyword and product research and the KDP Spy browser extension in the same place as your design tool.
  • Make crossword-heavy or text-heavy puzzle books and want full manual control of every page.
  • Like designing interiors by hand and already know its studio well.

If that is you, keep it, and set a reminder before any trial or renewal date.
