Checks run in your browser. Large books can take a minute: every page is rendered small to find blank pages.
What gets checked
- Trim size, and whether the file is set up with or without bleed
- The same page size on every page
- Page count against KDP's minimum and maximum
- File size under 650 MB
- Fonts embedded
- Blank pages in a row
- No password, bookmarks, comments or layers
KDP bleed vs no bleed
No bleed means your PDF pages are exactly the trim size, and nothing prints to the edge of the page. Keep text and artwork at least 0.25" from the top, bottom and outside edges. Pick “No Bleed” when you upload.
Bleedmeans your pages are 0.125" wider and 0.25" taller than the trim size. KDP trims 0.125" off the top, bottom and outside edge, so artwork that runs off the PDF page ends up printing right to the edge of the book. Keep text at least 0.375" from those edges and pick “Bleed (PDF only)” when you upload. The inside edge gets no bleed because it is bound into the spine.
Use bleed if even one page has a picture, background or border that should touch the edge. KDP says the whole file should then be set up with bleed: don't mix bleed and no-bleed page sizes in one PDF. For coloring books in particular, read KDP bleed vs no bleed for coloring books.

Minimum margins by page count
The checker reports which row applies to your file. It doesn't measure margins; KDP's Print Previewer does that after upload.

| 24 to 150 | 0.375" | 0.25" | 0.375" |

Frequently asked questions
What does the KDP interior checker check?
It reads every page of your interior PDF and checks the page size against KDP's trim sizes with and without bleed, whether every page is the same size, the page count against KDP's minimum and maximum for your format, ink and trim size, the 650 MB file size limit, unembedded fonts, runs of blank pages, password protection, and bookmarks, comments or layers that KDP asks you to remove.
Is my manuscript uploaded anywhere?
No. The PDF is read by your own browser and never leaves your device. There's no sign-up, and closing the tab discards it.
What is bleed and no bleed in KDP?
No bleed means the PDF pages are exactly the trim size, such as 8.5" × 11", and nothing prints to the edge: keep everything at least 0.25" from the top, bottom and outside edges. Bleed means the pages are 0.125" wider and 0.25" taller than the trim size, such as 8.625" × 11.25", so artwork can run past the edge and KDP trims it off. Keep text at least 0.375" from the edges in a bleed file.
How do I know if my PDF has bleed?
Look at the page size. If it equals a KDP trim size, it's a no-bleed file. If it's the trim size plus 0.125" in width and 0.25" in height, it's a bleed file. Drop the PDF into the checker and it tells you which one it is and which option to pick when you upload to KDP.
What is the minimum page count for a KDP book?
24 pages for a paperback, 72 pages for a paperback printed in standard color, and 75 pages for a hardcover. KDP counts every side of a sheet as a page and rounds an odd page count up to the next even number.
What is the maximum page count on KDP?
It depends on the format, ink, paper and trim size. A black-and-white paperback on white paper can have up to 828 pages at 6" × 9", but only 590 at 8.5" × 11". Standard color paperbacks top out at 600 pages, and hardcovers at 550. The table on this page lists the limit for each paperback trim size.
How many pages do I need for spine text?
At least 79 pages. KDP rejects covers that have spine text on thinner books, so leave the spine blank until your interior reaches that page count.
What is KDP's file size limit for a manuscript?
650 MB. Larger files fail to convert. The usual cause is images saved above 600 DPI; KDP needs at least 300 DPI and recommends no more than 600.
How many blank pages does KDP allow?
No more than 4 blank pages in a row at the beginning or in the middle of the book, and no more than 10 in a row at the end. A single blank page between pages, like the back of each page in a one-sided coloring book, is fine.
Does the checker test my margins?
No. It tells you the minimum margins KDP requires for your page count, but it can't reliably tell where text sits on the page, so it doesn't guess. KDP's Print Previewer checks margins after you upload.
If my file passes, will KDP accept it?
Passing means the file meets the specs that can be checked from the PDF itself. KDP's Print Previewer also checks margins, image resolution and content after upload, so always review the preview before you publish.
How many books can I publish on KDP each week?
KDP lets you create 2 new titles per book format each week.
Specs from KDP's help pages: trim size, bleed and margins, paperback submission guidelines, formatting issues and paperback cover. Checked October 2026. KDP can change its specs, so confirm in Print Previewer before you publish.
