How a personalized coloring book is made

Open the story coloring book or coloring book creator. In the "Who is in your book?" step, add your child: one photo and their name. Add a brother, a grandparent or the family dog the same way, up to 15 characters in a story coloring book or eight in a coloring book. Then describe what happens, choose the age and the number of pages, and InkChamps draws a black-and-white page for every part of the adventure with your child in it. A story coloring book also writes a line of story under each picture that calls them by name. You can redraw any page you want changed, then download one PDF to print at home or at a print shop.

How to make a coloring book from your child's photo

1

Add a photo and a name

Upload a clear photo of your child and type their name. Add siblings, grandparents or pets the same way, up to eight in a coloring book or 15 in a story coloring book.

2

Describe the adventure

"Maya explores the moon and makes friends with a robot." Choose the age and how many pages you want.

3

Print the PDF

Every page is drawn with your child in it. Redraw any page you want changed, then download and print.

Which photo to use

The drawing is made from what the photo shows, so the photo you pick decides how recognisable your child is on the page.

  1. 1

Face the camera, in good light

A clear, well-lit photo where the face is easy to see works far better than a dark or blurry one.

  2. 2

    One person per photo

Each character is one photo and one name. If you want a sibling in the book too, add them as their own character with their own photo.

  3. 3

    Show what makes them them

Curly hair, glasses, a favourite hat: if it shows clearly in the photo, it can show in the drawing.

  4. 4

    Any phone photo is fine

There is no size limit. A large photo is scaled down before it is sent, never cropped.

Your child is drawn as a cartoon coloring-page character, not traced from the photo. The photo itself is never printed in the book.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make a coloring book from a photo of my child?

Yes. Add your child's photo and name in the "Who is in your book?" step of the coloring book or story coloring book creator, describe what should happen, and InkChamps draws them into the pages as black-and-white line art you can color.

Will the drawing look like my child?

It is a cartoon drawing, not a trace of the photo. It keeps the things that make your child recognisable, such as their hair, glasses and clothes, and keeps them the same from page to page. If one page doesn't look right, redraw just that page.

How long does it take?

Minutes. You describe the book once, every page is drawn in one go, and the PDF is ready to download as soon as the pages are done. There is nothing to ship.

How much does a personalized coloring book cost?

A story coloring page costs 2 credits and a plain coloring page costs 1. Adding a photo does not change the price. The smallest credit pack is 50 credits for $4.99, enough for a 25-page story coloring book or a 50-page coloring book. Once you have the PDF you can print as many copies as you like.

Can I put more than one child in the book?

Yes. Add up to 15 characters in a story coloring book, or eight in a coloring book, each with their own photo and name: siblings, cousins, grandparents or a pet. Anyone else the story needs is designed for you.

Do you send a printed book?

No. You get a print-ready PDF. Print it at home on ordinary paper, take it to a local print shop, or upload it to a print-on-demand service such as Lulu or Amazon KDP for a bound copy.

What happens to the photo I upload?

It is used to draw the characters in your book. The photo is never placed in the pages, only the drawing is, and InkChamps does not sell personal information. The privacy policy at inkchamps.com/privacy/ has the details.

What ages is it for?

Choose the age when you create the book. Pages for toddlers get big, simple shapes with thick lines, and pages for older children get more detail.

Why children color longer when they're in the picture

A child who finds themselves on the page stops flipping and starts coloring. Seeing their own curly hair or their own glasses on an astronaut makes the book theirs, and they want to know what they do on the next page.

Personalized books have usually meant ordering a printed copy, choosing from a few set stories and waiting for it to arrive. InkChamps draws the whole book while you wait, around any story you describe, so it can be about this week's obsession: the dinosaur museum trip, the new baby brother, the first lost tooth.

Because you get a PDF rather than one printed copy, you can print it again when the pages are colored in, make one for each child at a birthday party, or print a single page for a rainy afternoon.
