First Day of School Story Book Prompts for Picture Books
A first day of school story book helps a child picture the day before it happens, and lets them see that other kids, and even teachers, feel nervous too. These prompts give InkChamps a hero, a worry and a warm ending, and it writes and illustrates the rest. They work for parents of new preschoolers and kindergartners, teachers welcoming a class and KDP sellers stocking back-to-school titles.

Kit, a little fox cub with a too-big blue backpack, starts school at Hollow Oak. She holds her dad's paw until the very last second. All morning Kit feels wobbly: the classroom is loud, she doesn't know the songs, and she misses home. At lunch she opens her box and finds a note with a drawing of two foxes holding paws. Kit feels warm inside, shares her crackers with a shy owlet named Wren, and at pickup she has a drawing of her own for Dad.
Why it works: Parents of nervous starters get a story, and an idea to copy, that helps a child carry home with them into class.

Gemma the very tall giraffe

Gemma, a young giraffe with a purple neck scarf, is so tall she has to duck through the classroom door. Her desk is too small, her knees knock the table and the other animals giggle. At recess Gemma hides behind a tree. Then the class ball flies over the hedge, and nobody can find it, except Gemma, who spots it from way up high. Her classmates cheer, the teacher gives her the window seat, and Gemma decides being tall is just right.
Why it works: Children who feel they stand out see a difference turn into a gift, a warm first-week read-aloud for teachers.

Jayden, a boy with a brand-new rocket backpack, is nervous about first grade. So is his teacher, Ms. Okafor, who has bright braids and polka-dot glasses. It's her first day at this school too. Pages switch between them: both can't eat breakfast, both check their bags three times, both have butterflies. When Jayden finds Ms. Okafor's lost name badge in the hallway, they share a secret: they're both nervous. By home time they've decided first days are better together.
Why it works: Teachers love reading it on day one, and kids are surprised and reassured that grown-ups get nervous too.

Tips for making a first day of school story book
Name one specific worry (missing a parent, not knowing anyone) and resolve that worry, not every worry.
Show the hero's grown-up returning at pickup; it's the reassurance kids need most.
Publish by early July for back-to-school search traffic; KDP needs 24 pages or more.
Make your own first day of school story book
Start from one of these prompts or write your own. InkChamps turns it into a print-ready PDF.
