Can You Sell AI-Generated Coloring Books on Amazon? KDP Rules for 2026

Gunjan Chhetri·
Four rules for selling AI coloring books on Amazon KDP: disclose AI-generated images, no copyrighted characters, honest printable pages, and 2 new titles per format per week

Yes. Amazon KDP lets you publish and sell coloring books whose pages were made with AI. It sets four conditions:

  1. You tell KDP. When you publish, you have to disclose AI-generated images, including interior coloring pages and the cover.
  2. You don't infringe. No copyrighted characters, brands or someone else's artwork, even if an AI tool drew them for you.
  3. The book isn't misleading or low quality. KDP can remove books that disappoint customers.
  4. You stay within the new title limit. Since 21 September 2026, KDP allows only 2 new titles per format per week.

One more thing matters before you invest time. In the US, images made purely from a prompt generally can't be copyrighted, so you may not be able to stop others copying your pages.

This guide covers each rule with Amazon's own wording, shows where the question appears in KDP, and ends with a checklist and FAQ. It is based on KDP's help pages and announcements and on the US Copyright Office, all checked on 28 September 2026. It is not legal advice.

Quick facts

Question Answer
Does KDP allow AI coloring books? Yes, subject to its content guidelines
Do I have to disclose AI? Yes, if AI created the pages or the cover. Not if you only used AI to edit your own drawings
Where do I disclose it? On the Paperback Content page, under "AI-Generated Content"
Do shoppers see the disclosure? Amazon doesn't say it shows it, and third-party guides report it isn't on product pages
Can I copyright AI coloring pages? In the US, not from prompts alone. Your own selection, arrangement and edits can be protected
How many new books can I publish? 2 titles per format per week, since 21 September 2026
Can I use Disney, Pokémon or Bluey characters? No. That infringes someone else's rights, AI or not

What KDP's rules say about AI

KDP's Content Guidelines have a section on AI content. The key rule is that you must tell Amazon about AI-generated content, and that AI-generated images include "cover and interior images and artwork":

Amazon KDP Content Guidelines section on artificial intelligence content, defining AI-generated and AI-assisted content

The difference between the two labels decides whether you have to disclose anything:

  • AI-generated: an AI tool created the actual content. This still applies "even if you applied substantial edits afterwards". Cleaning up the lines of an AI page does not make it your own drawing.
  • AI-assisted: you created the content yourself and used AI to edit, refine or improve it. Using AI only to brainstorm ideas also counts as AI-assisted. KDP does not need to know about AI-assisted content.

What that means for a coloring book

How you made it KDP category Disclose?
Pages generated by an AI tool (a coloring page generator, Midjourney, ChatGPT and so on), used as-is AI-generated images Yes
AI-generated pages that you then cleaned up, redrew in places or recomposed AI-generated images ("even if you applied substantial edits") Yes
You drew the pages and used AI to clean lines, remove noise or upscale AI-assisted No
You used ChatGPT for theme ideas, then drew every page yourself AI-assisted No
Hand-drawn interior, AI-generated cover AI-generated images (the cover counts) Yes
Intro page, captions or story text written by AI AI-generated text Yes, for text

Whatever you answer, KDP adds that you are responsible for making sure the content follows every guideline, "including by complying with all applicable intellectual property rights".

Where KDP asks the AI question

The question is on the Paperback Content page, between the cover and the book preview:

KDP Paperback Content page showing the AI-Generated Content section asking: Did you use AI tools in creating texts, images, and/or translations in your book? Yes or No

The "AI-Generated Content" section on KDP's Paperback Content page.

If you answer Yes, KDP asks follow-up questions about which kinds of content used AI: text, images or translations. For an AI coloring book, the answer is images, and usually the whole interior. Answer accurately. The question also appears when you edit and republish an existing book.

Does Amazon show "AI-generated" on the product page?

The KDP form says Amazon is "collecting information" about AI use. Neither the form nor the guidelines say the answer is shown to shoppers. Independent guides, including KDP Builder's disclosure guide from August 2026, report that it is not shown as a label on product pages. Treat it as information Amazon keeps, and don't count on nobody noticing. Customers often do, and they say so in reviews.

Can you copyright an AI-generated coloring book?

In the United States, not the AI images themselves unless a human decided the creative details. In Part 2 of its report on copyright and AI, published 29 January 2025, the US Copyright Office says generative AI output is protected "only where a human author has determined sufficient expressive elements". That can include creative arrangements or modifications, but "not the mere provision of prompts".

What this means in practice:

  • Other people may be able to copy your AI pages, and you may have little you can do about it.
  • What you can protect is what you created: your selection and arrangement of the pages, text you wrote yourself, a cover you designed, and pages you substantially redrew by hand.
  • Your brand is your real protection. A recognizable series, a consistent style and good reviews are harder to copy than any single page.

Copyright law differs between countries. If the rights matter to your business, talk to a lawyer where you publish.

What gets AI coloring books rejected or removed

1. Characters and brands

This is the most common way AI coloring books get into trouble. Image tools will happily draw famous cartoon characters, logos and the style of a specific living artist. KDP's guidelines make you responsible for not violating "copyright, trademark, brand, privacy, publicity, or other rights". Stick to original characters and generic subjects, such as "a dinosaur", not a named franchise dinosaur.

2. Misleading listings

KDP does not allow "descriptive content meant to mislead customers or that doesn't accurately represent the content of the book". For coloring books, that includes:

  • calling AI pages "hand-drawn";
  • using cover or listing images that don't match the interior;
  • claiming more unique designs than the book actually has.

3. Pages that disappoint

KDP also doesn't allow "content that's typically disappointing to customers". AI coloring pages have predictable faults:

  • broken or double outlines;
  • grey shading that can't be colored;
  • extra fingers and warped faces;
  • tiny details a child can't color;
  • the same page repeated with small changes.

Check every page at print size before you publish, and order a proof copy of the first book.

4. Publishing in bulk

In 2023, Amazon cited "the rapid evolution of generative AI" when it lowered its limits on new title creation. On 22 September 2026, KDP tightened them further:

KDP Community announcement dated September 22, 2026: starting Monday, September 21, 2026, you can create up to 2 titles per format per week

Screenshot of the KDP Community announcement "Update on KDP Title Creation Limits", taken 28 September 2026.

The limit is 2 titles per format per week, counted separately for eBook, paperback and hardcover, and it resets every Sunday at 00:00 UTC. It only applies to creating new titles, not to books you have already published. For coloring book publishers, that caps new paperbacks at about 8 or 9 a month. The "publish 30 AI books a week" strategy no longer works. Each title has to earn its place.

Can you actually make money with AI coloring books?

Some people do, but AI has made getting started so easy that the market is crowded. The top answer in a popular r/passive_income thread on the subject was blunt: the real money is in the YouTube videos about it. That skepticism is healthy. The books that sell share a few things:

Checklist before you publish an AI coloring book

  • Every page is an original subject: no franchise characters, logos or a named artist's style
  • Every page was checked at print size: closed outlines, no grey fills, no distorted hands or faces, no near-duplicates
  • The title, description and cover match the interior, and nothing claims "hand-drawn"
  • You answered Yes to AI-Generated Content and marked images (and text, if AI wrote any)
  • The AI tool's terms allow commercial use of what you generated
  • You ordered a proof copy before publishing the first book in a series
  • You planned releases around the 2-titles-per-week limit

InkChamps is one option for the pages: the KDP coloring book creator generates a consistent set of pages from one brief and exports a print-ready interior PDF at your KDP trim size. The pages are AI-generated, so disclose them in KDP like any other AI images. For the full publishing walkthrough, see how to publish and sell a coloring book on Amazon KDP.

Frequently asked questions

Can you sell AI-generated coloring books on Amazon?
Yes. Amazon KDP accepts coloring books made with AI, as long as you disclose AI-generated images when you publish, use no copyrighted characters or brands, keep the listing accurate, and publish within KDP's title limits.
Is it legal to sell AI-generated books on Amazon?
Selling them is allowed by KDP's rules. The legal risk comes from what the AI produced: pages that copy copyrighted characters, logos or a specific artist's work can infringe someone else's rights, and KDP holds you responsible for that.
Do I have to tell KDP my coloring pages were made with AI?
Yes, if an AI tool created the pages or the cover, even if you edited them heavily afterwards. You don't have to disclose AI-assisted work, where you drew the pages yourself and only used AI to clean up, refine or brainstorm.
Does Amazon show buyers that a book is AI-generated?
Amazon doesn't say it displays the answer, and independent guides report that it is not shown as a label on product pages. Buyers often notice AI pages anyway and mention it in reviews.
Can I copyright an AI-generated coloring book?
In the US, not the AI images themselves when they come from prompts alone. The Copyright Office says protection needs a human to determine sufficient expressive elements. Your own text, cover design, arrangement and substantial hand edits can be protected.
How many books can I publish on KDP per week?
Since 21 September 2026, KDP allows 2 new titles per format per week (eBook, paperback and hardcover counted separately). The limit resets every Sunday at 00:00 UTC and doesn't affect books already published.
Can I use Disney or Pokémon characters in an AI coloring book?
No. Copyrighted and trademarked characters infringe their owners' rights no matter which tool drew them, and KDP can remove the book and act on your account.
